What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient healing art using the hands that is thought to have originated in Japan in the 1920s by Dr. Mikao Usui although healing with the hands has its roots in many cultures around the world for thousands of years. The word Reiki is often translated from Japanese to mean Universal life force energy and pronounced as ‘Ray-Key’. The Rei means a higher universal wisdom and the Ki means energy.

Many cultures use different words to describe this life force energy – in India it is called Prana, in China it is called Chi, in our culture in the UK it could be referred to as Vital essence. This Ki energy is the same energy in all living beings including plants. It could be likened to electricity, we can’t see it but we can see and feel its effects.

What are the benefits of having a Reiki treatment?

Reiki is an holistic healing therapy treatment meaning that it works on all the levels of the body – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The root of the word ‘heal’ means ‘to make whole’. To become whole and to heal is to become more of ourselves more of the time without trying to hide who we really are.

On a physical level, Reiki can help with alleviating pain, relaxing and releasing tension from the body. On an emotional level, Reiki can help with releasing negative emotions and encourage them to move to a more higher vibrational level such as peace and gratitude.

On a mental level, Reiki can help with letting go of unhelpful ways of thinking and beliefs. On a spiritual level, Reiki can help to deepen our connection to our higher selves and we may receive insights into our human experience.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

After an initial consultation where we discuss the reasons you would like to receive Reiki, I will ask you to lie down, if able, on the massage bed. There is no need to remove any clothing and I will cover you with a blanket. The treatment itself lasts about 45 minutes and during that time I will place my hands on or near your body and allow the healing energy to flow from my hands to wherever it is needed.

Sometimes people experience warmth or a tingling from my hands. Others may see colours or feel the energy moving around their body. There is usually a deep feeling of peace and calm. There is no right way to experience Reiki and each treatment is different depending on what the person needs that day.

What conditions are Reiki most beneficial for?
This list is not exhaustive and could help with:
-
Anxiety and Depression
-
Insomnia or sleep issues
-
Chronic pain
-
Feeling run down or depleted
-
Supporting recovery after surgery or cancer therapy
-
Stress reduction

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on the reasons you are seeking help with Reiki. If it is for a chronic condition then it may take regular treatments, perhaps weekly, to notice significant changes.

Sometimes one treatment is all that is needed to instigate a change or an insight that facilitates healing.
Sometimes people like to come once a month to feel a ‘top up’ in this vital energy particularly if going through a stressful time. This can be discussed during our initial meeting.
